This poetry collection portrays really tangible feelings of rage, despair, and even fear that come alongside pervasive Black death and suffering throughout America's history and present moment. McGowan does an excellent job of communicating these feelings and her complicated thoughts and reactions.
The actual structure of the poems felt to me more reminiscent of brief, evocative political essays rather than poems as few utilized much poetic imagery or other hallmarks of the form. Otherwise, a really good collection.
