Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King, Owen King

5.0

Having not read many King books recently I forgot how much I love his style of writing, the detail he provides and the characters he creates, not to mention the superb stories he tells. And clearly his offspring have inherited/developed those same skills as Stephen joins forces with one of his son's, Owen, to tell a tale that is gripping, terrifying, amsuing and heart-warming all at the same time. Yes this is a long book, yes there is a lot of information and characters to get your head around and yes it is a slow starter but for me that is part of the charm of King's writing as you get drawn in without even realising it, finding yourself rooting for some and hoping karma catches up with a few others. And once again King has created some kick-ass female characters, many of them in fact, as well as showing how important the female side of humanity is in maintaining that humanity (the menfolk do not come out of this particularly well...). The story has a supernatural/fantasy feel with the implications being rather disturbing, for the Earth side of things anyway, but it is still driven by the characters despite the many and varied events which are very much driven by the characters decisions and thought processes. I would highly recommend giving this the time but I know I am very biased.
