The Unhoneymooners, by Christina Lauren

3.0

At first I was off put by the fact the love interest was the main character’s twin sister’s brother-in-law — would this family tree become a circle?

Luckily, the brother turned out to be a complete and utter douchebag so I didn’t have to worry about the dynamics of two brothers dating a pair of twin sisters.

As much as I love an enemies to lovers plot line, this one was just plain annoying. The basis of the main characters’ hatred was milquetoast at best, and for the first half of the book, I felt like I was reading the same remixed sentences over and over. Olive finds something Ethan said charming or attractive, but wait! She can’t think that way because she is supposed to hate him. I did not feel much tension between these two characters for the thought process to repeat itself so many times. Furthermore, Olive’s overwhelming distaste for Ethan was just at points unrealistic and ridiculous, especially when she would put it above enjoying herself on a free trip to Hawaii. I also thought the author was too coy with the sex between the characters — either write the spice or just move on without lingering on the fact two characters had sex.

While I have my complains about the book, I thought the dialogue was humorous and that there were enough believable friendship-building moments to surmount in the love between Ethan and Olive. The final act of the book seemed a bit out of left field, but I didn’t mind the refocusing of family and a true tense moment between the main characters — it added the realism lacking in their honeymoon phase relationship.
