In the first story, The Adventure of the Empty House we learn that Holmes miraculously survived the fall and kept his death a secret for the last few months as Moriarty's gang was still at large.

The edition at my school library had a foreword which told the story behind Holmes resurrection. My best friend and I read with great interest that Doyle had killed Holmes as he had grown tired of him. Doyle wanted to be recognized for his other work beside Sherlock Holmes. However, Holmes had become such a beloved character at that time that there was an intense public backlash, especially from the readers of The Strand Magazine. One woman fan even wrote a letter to Doyle starting with these words, "You brute...". Eventually Doyle was forced to revive his most famous fictional detective and thankfully wrote four more books about Holmes.
