“Maybe I was right. We’re not normal people. We are monsters. But if we’re monsters, we’ll thrive in the dark. Together.”

Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver
Ruinous Love Trilogy, Book 1

I really wanted to love this one, and to some extent - I did. I loved Rowan from the first page, I loved that he was such a babygirl, and that he was able to so easily fall in love and open his heart to Sloan. I loved Sloan's personality, strong and willful, but with a backstory so tragic that made her soft ultimately. I loved Sloan's relationship with Lark, and Rowan's relationship with his brothers. I even loved the plot and premise of the book, but I was severely let down with the book's pacing. I've always been a fan of the advice 'show don't tell', and unfortunately Butcher & Blackbird is all TELL, and very little show. The time jumps are incredibly jarring and lead to the story becoming very choppy and incohesive, one moment the characters are hesitant to admit even a slight attraction and the next chapter they're saying 'I love you' and moving in together, and apparently time has passed and they've developed their relationship but we've gotten to see none of it - that was SO disappointing to me.

Overall, it was a fun read, but the pacing is why I docked it at least a star.
