I used to love this book when I was younger, but it doesn't appeal to me anymore. The majority of the book is just Landon passing judgment onto people he knows little about and complaining about basic shit. The only valid issue he had was his semi-absent father. I didn't love the way Jamie was written, she's sweet and I appreciate her constantly helping others, but she sometimes comes off as clueless. I think the movie does a better job of fleshing Jamie out as a character. She's still kind, but she knows when others are making fun of her and defends herself when necessary. They expand on her interest in science and don't focus primarily on her faith, unlike the book version of Jamie who is just a reflection of her faith. Landon is only redeemable towards the end of the book and that's also where the romance starts to pick up. Landon is rarely honest with Jamie and it pisses me off. Honestly, I don't know why she was interested in him. He only helped people out of guilt. I honestly felt like he only changed when he found out Jamie was sick. I know the end states that Landon would have married Jamie even if she never was sick, but I don't believe that. He might've dumped her as soon as he left for college. It gets three stars because it still managed to be a tear-jerker towards the end, and it was a childhood favorite.
