this was horrifying. it gave me haunting of hill house (the tv show, not the book) vibes: a family horror that made me cry as much as it scared me. i loved the characters, and thought the portrayal of a little girl’s relationship with her older sister was particularly realistic and therefore made the book much sadder.
the two-punch twist at the end was difficult to stomach at the first blow, just by finding out that the whole family was killed. but then having to go along with little merry and watch her family die at her own hands bordered on impossible.
