My Friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf

4.0

Terrifying look into the life of a to-be serial killer. I think at some point or another we all looked around our high school cafeteria wondering which of our classmates would end up in the White House in 20 years... Or the loony bin. And this is expressed in the graphic novel of Mr Backderf, whose art style captures the menacing tone of the situation, though I didn't enjoy it.
This was a haunting read as I found myself both in sympathy for the confused boy Dhamer, and yet utterly repulsed by his thoughts, actions, and my own empathy towards the boy who would grow up to have such a dark future.
I really could not understand the narrator though, as there was little to no emotions other than disgust and condescension towards Dhamer at all and I think that really hindered the overall story. If it had been written better and had more in-depth reflection, I think this would have become a go-to novel for understanding the signs of dangerous and deteriorating minds.
