Gentleman Jack: The Real Anne Lister by Anne Choma

4.0

This book covers the period of Anne Lister's life told in the BBC/HBO adaptation - from 1832 to 1835, but gives a good overview of her earlier life and adventures along the way. It's mostly written by the author and follows a very similar plot to the TV version, with Anne's diary entries quoted throughout.

What I got most out of this book was how Anne relied on and used her diary to cultivate her views on the world - and on her own sexuality and happiness. Her diary allowed her to articulate and work through her emotions and she emerges from the pages as an eternally optimistic and confident woman.
