Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb

4.0

The Long Halloween was a compelling, self-contained mystery, that utilised Batman's remarkable rogue's gallery to a very clever effect, without ever feeling bloated. Also, big praise for having multiple interesting female characters who aren't just there to shag or die to motivate. The art was highly stylised and at times was extremely effective in conveying tone and menace, but there were times when I craved some clean lines - I'd see Bruce Wayne on the page and have no idea who he was until the context of what he or other characters were saying to clue me in. I love a clean line, Staples and McKelvie remain my favourite artists. Still, I was very glad I read this and the whodunnit was especially fascinating.
