Money Out Loud: All the Financial Stuff No One Taught Us by Berna Anat

funny informative reflective medium-paced

4.5

An excellent introduction to personal finances, perfect for high school seniors or anyone else who needs to be getting ready for financial independence. This book has info that will be useful to just about everyone, but specifically speaks to marginalized communities, esp bipoc women.
The writing felt like it was trying too hard to be funny and relatable at times, which is something teens sniff out immediately and often thats enough to make them drop a book, but on the whole I thought the conversational tone was a good choice for a topic like this that so often is presented in a way that's so boring your eyes glaze over but also somehow simultaneously panic-inducing. I reaaalllyyy appreciate that this was neither, and that it managed to give useful info about all sorts of financial topics including budgeting, taxes, different types of banks and bank accounts, loans/debt, saving and investing, spending ethically, donating, and more. It doesn't cover any one topic in too much detail, but goes deep enough that you are left feeling like you understand enough to start making basic decisions and know where to start or what to look up if you want to dive deeper into something. Each chapter also ends with a checklist summarizing the section's main actionable points.
