(As a disclosure, I listened to the audiobook on in the background for the entire book.)  It was contrived a bit.  The whole time hearing the story, I just kept thinking it was a bad knockoff of Stephen King’s It.  The writing wasn’t bad, but the story was not original nor scary in the slightest.
