i adore brosgol’s works, with her storytelling and her art. i like her frequent use of russian characters, since it gives some sense of relatability to me, at least. in regards to the story itself, i definitely would’ve liked a little more unraveling of emily’s character. although i did enjoy the twist, it would’ve made more of an impact to see her behavior grow more and more obsessive, or to have just a little more background on her besides just the lying about the murder and her need to involve herself into a somewhat modern version of herself through anya. i think anything of the sort would’ve made the ending a bit less anticlimactic. i really liked this graphic novel nonetheless, and definitely recommend it.
Graphic: Bullying, Death, Fatphobia, and Murder
Moderate: Body shaming, Infidelity, Xenophobia, and Dysphoria
Minor: Sexual harassment and War
