When No One Is Watching, by Alyssa Cole

2.0

I really wanted to like this book and I know exactly what the author was going for, but ultimately I don’t think she had the skill set to really execute it properly. A lot of the build up lacked urgency and was kind of nebulous, the middle third dragged, and the last bit was like a completely insane action movie. At least that bit was entertaining and somewhat satisfying, I guess, but man was the pacing off.

I also didn’t care for the main character at all, which was rough given that it’s written in first person and she’s supposed to sell us the horror and urgency of the situation. The book did really make me hate white people even more than I usually do tho, so at least there’s that.
