Prose and world building is top notch but was the length of the book warranted? No. Cut out a good 40-50% in the middle and you would still get the gist of plot and not having missed much - maybe just the cliche repetitive internal monologues and dialogues, and the MC in denial of her actual helplessness in the situation she is in.

What were the trials for? Where was the chemistry between Essiya/Sylvia and Arin? I almost felt both those tropes (trials/games & enemies-to-lovers) are popular at the moment and was added in for good measure … and then ran out of time to dive deeper into those and so haphazardly threw in a random cliffhanger where our MC decides to be less selfish than in the before book.

The trial scenes were too short and predictable too but I do enjoy that there was a lot of action amongst all the waffle.

Hopefully book 2 is a tighter ship.
