West With Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge
4.0
Read this book as a “palate cleanser” in between some denser reads and it was perfect for it. A sweet little diddly based on the true story of the ‘hurricane giraffes’ that made their way from New York Harbor to the San Diego zoo on the back of a rigged up truck in 1938.
There are trials & tribulation along the way and a bit of historical context for the war, the Dust Bowl and other events, but none of it goes very deep/we don’t spend very much time on them, keeping this a pretty light read. If i weren’t reading it as a brain break book, i would have wanted a bit more on the history as well as the characters’ back stories.
I thought the writing of the ending was beautiful and appreciated the author’s note about on protecting endangered species.
