If You Break by J. Rose, Jessalyn Thorn

3.0

I have very much enjoyed this author’s other works (if you haven’t read them, you definitely should), so I was excited to follow her fantasy route. Now, the premise was interesting. I liked the undead dead with some supernatural abilities within a secret world within our world. There was action, there was romance and there was betrayal. It was fairly predictable at times, and it was slow and yet fast at the same time. It’s hard to describe, but I’m sure you know what I mean.

I didn’t mind the FMC, I didn’t connect with her much, but, she was probably my favorite character. The MMCs, they were OK but I think we need to get to know them. I do like that they have their own pasts, separate and together, that they need to overcome in order to form a cohesive relationship. That growth will definitely be interesting in the next book. I would have liked to know more about the villains and how they came to be so there’s a better understanding for why they are acting the way that they are.

We are thrown into the middle of a war and it feels like there are pieces missing. This was a decent introduction, and I think that once we see motives, learn about the past, and more about this prophecy, then I will feel more invested.

This has the building blocks to be an interesting and different series. I think we just need to experience more so that we can fully immerse ourselves and understand why certain things are important. With this foundation, the next book will most likely be a good sequel. We’re left on a decent cliffhanger and I’m expecting a lot of hurt, betrayal, revelations, and events we don’t see coming.
