The Ship of the Dead by Rick Riordan

4.0

4.23 stars. I get it now. I get why people like this better than the Kane Chronicles. It makes sense. Alex and Magnus are a straight IV of serotonin. Well, actually, not so straight, but you get it.

PT: Reading around the world: Norway (THIS ONE ACTUALLY *GENUINELY* COUNTS HAHAHAHA FINALLY!!!!), mythology, Riordan, YA books, OTPs

WIL

1) End-of-series appreciation. Riordan did it again. This exact same thing happened with Trials of Apollo. I liked the characters well enough for the first few books, but I didn't especially love them, yknow? But then... by this book... Gahhh I just liked them a lot more in this one. I didn't even MEAN to. It just HAPPENED. And now I want to REREAD the series again so I can like the first books more.

2) Alex and Magnus. HeLP MY HEART SOIHGJOS. THEY'RE SO CUTE. AND it's the classic Riordan dynamic of Oblivious Guy (Everyman archetype usually) and his Intelligent Love Interest who is at least decently annoyed they are crushing on Oblivious Guy. Growing up with Riordan means I adore this structure and I always will.

3) classic Norse myths. I feel like Rick got in the groove of Norse myth more in this book. Or maybe *I* got more in the groove, and I'm projecting. Whatever the case, the blend between classic Norse myth and Rick's revamped version for Magnus felt more seamless.

4) Samirah and praying. THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME A CHARACTER WHO DOESN'T COMPROMISE HER BELIEFS HERE TO FIT INTO THE NORSE STORYLINE WOW THAT WAS SO COOL.

5) "I wasn't gonna die without [kissing you]." HOERIGJHOAEHSGFOUSHEGOBIJOJAIFOGIH. I'm paraphrasing I think bc I don't remember where that exact line was and I can't find it again, but the noise my heart made reading that?? Like an old car starting again.

6) nautical theme. Why am I so obsessed with nautical books? Like it's really getting unreasonable at this point. All the nautical books just feel Right. In Riordanverse, the most obvious other nautical book is Sea of Monsters which was, of course, my favorite of PJO for literally no reason other than I just thought the ocean was neat. (For more of my favorite nautical books, see: Life of Pi or The Odyssey. Technically "space pirate" Mark Watney of The Martian qualifies too.)

7) Reading around the world: Norway. F I N A L L Y. AN ACTUAL SETTING OF NORWAY. I HAVE BEEN WAITING EVER SO (im)PATIENTLY FOR THIS.

WIDL
1) Related to WIL 1: I liked the characters but I didn't totally love all of them nor was I especially invested in the stories of the minor characters.

2) modestly resonated. This def resonated with me more than the others in the series, but it didn't have that sparkly after-effect high that I so desperately chase in my YA book selections.
