I literally love this book so much. This was a reread for me and my first impression of it being a fabulous romance absolutely held up.
James' turn of phrase is so gorgeous and the tone of the book is pretty literary, which ties in perfectly with the Shakespearean influences. I love Josie so much as a heroine - her vulnerability feels very honest and her bad temper and quick wit bring so much fun to the book. Her boldness are exactly the antidote to Mayne's tired cynicism, and it's clear to readers that he's desperate for her long before he even has a clue.
The sex scenes could be more explicit for my taste, but they're still hot and tender and sometimes very funny! The entire Essex Sisters series is excellent but this one is definitely my favourite.
