Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier

4.0

I was ready to abandon this book at approximately the 35-40% mark, it was monotonous and verbose; it seemed almost nothing was happening. The narrator was insipid, wimpy, and irritating, with no personality or sense of self-worth (She does not even have a name!). I didn’t think I could take much more. Yet, it’s a classic and several people I trust recommended it to me... Admittedly, I then decided to read a few spoiler reviews to see if it was worth my continuing. Something I read in a review made me want to go back to the book and give it another chance. I am glad that I did, it definitely picked up and got a lot more interesting and climactic after the 50% mark! I listened to the audiobook, and the reader Alexandra O’Karma was not the greatest, but I can’t blame Daphne for that. However the dialogue through the book was so tedious to listen to as Daphne insisted on “he said” or “she said” after every single phrase.... excruciating to listen to over and over and over again in the same conversation!!

I’m happy to say there was still a plot twist I didn’t know about or see coming at all, which always raises a book up a ⭐️ in my estimation.

I am typically a hater of all ambiguous endings, however, after retrospection I decided that variety of ending was near perfect for this particular story. What more could be said to give Mr. & Mrs. de Winter the closure they so desperately craved??
