Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb

5.0

An instant favorite! I'm impressed at how good Robin Hobb is at writing characters and making us care about them right from the start.

Every single character in this book is compelling, you either love them, or you hate them, you're angry about the decisions they make, you're sad when things happen to them; it doesn't even have to be a main character, there is a secondary character here that I would put among my most hated characters of all time. And that's Hobb's magic; she makes her characters feel real and distinct from one another.

But it doesn't stop there, because the story-telling in this is also top notch. I was so pulled into this new part of the world, I loved learning about Bingtown and how the Trader culture works, there is also such a sense of mystery and richness to the Rain Wild Traders and it's interesting to see how the two cultures clash at different points in the book. The concept of the live ships is also great, as well as the serpents, because we get a POV here that tells us that the serpents are more than mere dangerous sea beasts.

I was a bit nervous to start Liveship Traders because I often hear people say that it starts very slow, it doesn't have Fitz in it, but honestly, I was hooked from the first chapter and this might very well become one of my favorite fantasy series. Can't wait to see where the story goes from what happened at the end. Excellent book.
