Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Comes Back by Mary Shepard, P.L. Travers

2.0

I completely understand the charm of these books. The imaginative adventures that Jane and Michael go on when Mary Poppins is around are wonderful, and I'd love to imagine I were those kids going to star parties, floating in the air with a balloon, and turning upside down in mid-air.

However, Mary Poppins secrecy, denial, and downright anger when the children want to talk about their adventures with her got real old. I don't think much of her as a nanny, and I disapprove of the way she has Jane and Michael and the twins (and me, as the reader) in tenterhooks about her moods and directives. Toward the end, I often skimmed through so much of the whimsical detail, just to get further along, since I didn't want to read about Mary anymore.

I don't plan on reading any other books in the series.
