The Children of Húrin by J.R.R. Tolkien

4.25

What a gem.

As a long time fan of the LoTR films, it was quite exciting last year when I began my read-through. The initial journey through LoTR and the appendixs left me wanting for more, but the silmarillion was a little aloft for me, as much as I found joy and love in it's latter half. After that I was left wanting more and more, but I wanted more traditional narrative. Of course I could re read LoTR but having it so fresh in my mind I wanted a new narrative.
 Enter Children of Hurin

I didn't know Tolkien had such a dark story under his wing, but it's not dark in a revolting way. Some of the plot events led to darker paths and outcomes than I anticipated. When I closed the final pages I sat for a moment slightly shook, surprised that such a gem sat on my bookshelf unopened for so long. I could elaborate on this story in long form, but for the sake of a Goodreads review just go read it!
