Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale

4.0

it's always so satisfying to finally read something that's been on my to-read list since 2007. :/
(in this case, it was also satisfying because i really liked the book.)

after losing her family, dashti finds work as a lady's maid. unfortunately, her lady is about to be locked in a tower for seven years for refusing to marry a nasty man. dashti joins lady saren in the tower, figuring she'll at least be fed for seven years. but when rats (and saren) start eating more than their fair share, dashti knows they won't make it seven years. eventually she breaks them out and they journey to the country of saren's childhood love, where they work unrecognized as kitchen maids in his home. but war is coming, and saren's life is in danger. also, dashti is in love with a man who is already engaged, and thinks she is someone she's not. can she find a way to save the country, saren and herself?

good stuff. i want to read all of shannon hale's books.
