With a Blighted Touch by J. Todd Kingrea has all the makings of a prime spooky-time read: Small town with a shady history? Check. Mysterious disappearances and bizarre deaths claiming its citizens? Check. Freaky creatures lurking in the shadows? Check. And a main character with a peculiar connection to it all? Check. But, unfortunately, it blows its load a little too early, leaving very little to the imagination, and doesn’t do anything interesting with its all-too-familiar concept. Kingrea’s writing is stellar and informative, and he does a decent job of establishing the world before thrusting you into the action; but I found it hard to care about the characters and what happened to them, because everything played out exactly as I’d imagined it would.

It’s an easy and mildly entertaining read that will surely satisfy many fans of the genre. But it just missed the mark, for me, as a seasoned horror fan.
