This is probably one of the scariest book I ever read.
First, scary in a way that many of the things which happened in the book can possibly happen (if it didn't happen yet) in real life. This book is like a handbook on how to make an oligarchy work (I'm not very politically inclined tho so...).
Second, it made me think that we're not entirely capable of achieving equality. The explanation of the three classes and the vicious cycle these three are in and what could possibly happen if the three finally achieve equality is frighteningly real.
Third, Winston is me (and probably all of us). I hate conforming, I hate following orders, I hate routines. But somehow, conforming, following orders, and routines are an integral part of the society. So I quietly simmer and let steam out through my own personal acts of subversion. But unlike me, even the smallest of subversive thoughts could kill Winston. WTF is a THOUGHTCRIME???
Fourth, and probably the most scary (yet the most amusing part) is how BIG BROTHER changed Winston's opinion of him. The last chapter is pure nightmare, and the last four words still haunts. So yes, I'm going to read children's book after this (A WRINKLE IN TIME).
