The Copper Promise by Jen Williams

2.5

Yes, this is extremely clunky debut - partially because it's a bunch of novellas crammed into awkward novel shape, but also because it's rife with some of the most basic fantasy tropes and themes. Dragons, mages and lost magical knowledge, wronged nobility on a quest for vengeance, revenants, pirates, cursed armour... None of which is used innovatively, but it's all here just the same.

Despite the predictable plot, hapazard pacing, and repetitiveness of certain lines, I found a lot to like in Wydrin. She shows the author's potential to write compelling and sympathetic characters. Wydrin's interactions with the other characters in turn made them more compelling.

I'm in no rush to read the second book in this world, but I've high hopes for Jen William's sophomore series The Winnowing Flames.
