Living with Viola by Rosena Fung

5.0

Reading this, I felt overwhelmed with the visual representation of Livy's anxiety and fear as she struggles to fit into a new school. I think that's exactly what we are supposed to feel--just as Livy feels it. This is a powerful visual representation of what many young people struggle with and shines the light on how mental illness effects so many teens. To add to the weight of all of her other issues, Livy feels the pressure from her Chinese relatives to do her duty and earn good grades so she can get into medical school someday. This poor girl is carrying so much, and I think a lot of kids her age who read this will relate to how she feels. This is a great book to share with middle schoolers.
