Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

3.0

‘you could rattle the stars,’ she whispered. ‘you could do anything, if only you dared. and deep down, you know it, too. that’s what scares you most.’

i started the TOG series due all my bookstagram friends recommending it to me, so thankyou to them!

caleana sardothien, young woman assassin, is betrayed and sentenced to the salt mines of endovier. after a year, however, she is given an opportunity: if she wins a contest to become the king's champion, she will be granted a four-year contract, working as an assassin for the empire she hates, at the end of which time she will be freed.

‘he was lost—lost in a world of which he'd always dreamed.’

when i first started this book i was really interested in caleana! it was the first book i read of the series and i kept wondering who was caleana and what was her story? although in this book i didn’t get to find out, her humour, courage and kindness drew me in to the character. she was badass but was still companionate despite being an assassin and a slave. i was literally OBSESSED with celeana, dorian and choal, they were such a good trio and i loved their friendship! honestly at the end of the book i didn’t know who i wanted her to be with…

‘because it looks like he's in love with her,’

the book started off really well! i loved the banter between caleana and dorian, it was funny and refreshing starting a fantasy series that way. it didn’t start with a lot of world building which i loved! i did however get really bored for about 70% of the book the beginning and ending was so well done but the middle was so boring. i felt like all the tornaments weren’t written in detail and didn’t have enough focus on despite the whole book supposedly having caleana prepare for it. i was honestly annoyed as there was A LOT of detail on her walks around the garden, even when nothing important was happening all we got was more of her walking around rather than the training, tournaments and mysteries.

overall the the book was well written! i never harshly judge a fantasy series by the first book because we are just getting used to the characters. the characters were really likeable but again i wish more focus was placed on the actual plot rather than the miscellaneous things. i will however be continuing the series because i really want to know what happens to the characters!
