A tried and true premise with the fun twist of non-heteronormative sexuality and distinctive relationships between the characters. Unfortunately nothing really happens so those relationships don't feel utilized at all. The entire book is essentially rising action, and I was genuinely shocked when I reached the end because there had been no climax or even really setup to it. I love angst as much as the next reader, but there was no payoff in this book. I wanted some kind of trouble to happen not because I wanted the characters to struggle but because I wanted them to do literally anything other than holding each other and crying about their pasts without actually talking about their pasts. I don't know that I'm going to read the next book because I have no evidence that anything will actually happen.
