The Dream of Europe: Travels in the Twenty-First Century by Geert Mak

informative reflective medium-paced

4.25

A brilliant historical essay on Europe between 1999 - 2019. It was particularly interesting to read about Brexit from a European perspective, and also helped contextualise the perspective from which Mak came from in his writing about the continent more generally. Much of Europe and European identity between even his epilogue in 2019 and the Europe as it stands with Ukraine has changed. The book has encouraged me to dig a little deeper beyond headlines in order to understand Europe's social and political past.
