I was immersed in this book, reading through in a day, stopping to eat, sleep, exercise, and clear my mind. My every sense was woven into it: sight, sound, touch, taste, scent. Especially the scent. I have parallels in my life; when I was eight my alcoholic father died in a car accident. Hughs captured the depth of grief I felt and continue to feel for my parent: the confusion, the searching, the desperation. A part of my sadness healed when I read her resolution; I could see it foreshadowed retrospectively in the text. I wish the rest of my grief could be so wholesomely put to rest.
