To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

5.0

This book was REALLY good! One of my favorites of all time! I feel like I could read it over and over again and find new things in it! It’s jam-packed of symbolism and AMAZING quotes.

One of the things I most enjoyed was the emphasis on the friendship between Lily and Mr. Bankes being simply a friendship and nothing more. They had a very sweet and intellectual bond that I thought was cute. And Mrs. Ramsay was just too obsessed with trying to get Lily married off to someone.

I enjoy how characters like Lily and Mr. Bankes showcase various ways of living aside from the kind of life that the Ramsays lead of marriage and children. These two characters didn’t fit comfortably into that framework, so they stayed outside of it, and I love that!

Also, I could probably go on for a while about the actual lighthouse, specifically the relationship between it, James, and Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay in relationship to how their family dynamics are and the state of the family unit overall, but I would bore a lot of people, so I’ll just stress again that the level of symbolism in this novel is incredible!
