Gandhi: A March to the Sea by Alice B. McGinty

5.0

"Next to air and water, salt is perhaps the greatest necessity of life."
- Ghandi
India,1930

A beautiful picture book for middle graders which touches on the life of Ghandi and his non violent campaign to free India from British rule. The March described in the story was a symbolic gesture by Ghandi to defy the British law preventing Indians from using their own salt from the ocean. Instead they were forced to buy their salt from England and pay taxes on the salt. This march brought Hindus, Muslims and Untouchables together and started 17 years of non violent protest to British rule.

The storybook is beautifully illustrated and a great deal on Amazon.

Highly recommended for children and adults alike. If you have never sat through the movie Ghandi, then this is the history booklet for you.
