Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (Novel) Vol. 1 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu

5.0

I happened upon an OST from the live track and positively fell in love with the ethereal nature of the song. From there, I saw a short stop motion video, and then watched Seasons 1 and 2 of the Donghua. I ended up buying the first novel that same day, and stated reading it.

This was such a fun and exhilarating read. I love the purposeful revealing of Wei Wuxian’s character. Despite the other clans misunderstanding him, he truly tries to keep his intentions set on altruistic motives.

I know that I’m in for a slow, blooming, burning romance between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wanji- though it’s nearly imperceptible in the donghua season 1-2. The plot upholds the story plenty well enough to wait!

Certain chapters within the first novel were surprisingly sentimental. I was taken aback at just how well the narrative integrated the inner thoughts of characters without being overbearingly detailed.

The one and ONLY problem I have is that I constantly am looking up terms. All of the Chinese words used are not per se in the glossary. As of lover of languages, this wasn’t too much of an issue (though footnotes would have made it easier).

For me, this was a two-day read, and a very good one at that! The amount of sheer detail and the breathtaking interior artwork make this novel version simply incredible. I really enjoyed this book, and plan to continue reading from Chapter 33 of the online version. The ending was definitely abrupt, but that makes compete sense (as it came from a web novel with 113 chapters and 13 extra chapters). This has the perfect blend of culture, fantasy, action, suspense, and romance. I'm really excited to see how the plot continues to develop in the next chapters.

A huge and heartfelt thank you to Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, the fan and novel translators, artists, composers, actors, staff, and fans who made this story and its many adaptations possible, and kept the story of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji alive.
