The Grace Year by Kim Liggett

3.0

This strong plot told a haunting dystopian story. I was sold to it by being told it was like “the hunger games” meets “the handmaids tale”. I think this story tells more of a “lord of the flies”. When the girls get to the location where they’ll spend the next year they begin to go crazy and cause chaos. It was creepy.
I was bothered that we never actually got any magic- especially because that’s how the Grace year was magic. I would’ve loved to see Tierney fight back with superpowers.
A lot of the time I would roll my eyes because of how on the nose the author was with the differences between men and women- we get it- feminism= good. Make authority= bad. We get it.
If this book was written about 7 years ago we’d have been given a happy ending with Ryker & Tierney. I think leaving the ending (Tierney’s fate) ambiguous was both annoying but sensible. It leaves you feeling jilted- just like the Grace year girls.
