I was very nervous going into this book. Because it was book of the year on so many lists, I presumed it would have some sad and traumatic thing happen in it because that seems to be the case for most popular books. Light fluffy things don’t win awards. But I couldn’t find the evidence of what it could be in this book, so I went ahead and read it anyways. For anyone else like me, the big sad and tragic thing in this book is that a shooter comes in and kills Max and Sadie’s best friend at their workplace< / spoiler> Once that happened, I had a difficult time with the book because it was too sad.
But! I have a lot of great things to say about the book. It was absolutely GORGEOUSLY written! I have not read a book that well written in quite some time. The story floated seamlessly between time, place, and characters that feels like it should’ve been difficult to follow but it was not. The characters were all very interesting and different, both from each other and from what I’ve read before. My favorite part of the book was hearing them talk about games they were playing or making or brainstorming. That sort of creativity was so interesting and I definitely want to play these games myself!
