One S'more Summer by Beth Merlin
Did not finish book.
2.0
This, sadly, was not as good as I was hoping that it would be. I DNF'd this book at 40%.
This book was only a bit over 200 pages, but this story dragged. I've read some slow builds, but One S'more Summer gives it a whole new definition. After reading this book for about an hour I genuinely felt like I made no progress with the book. The writing was a little stiff and it wasn't very gripping. When I wasn't reading I didn't really have that urge to pick the book back up. It also wasn't edited very well, as about 10% of the way in (around page 27 of the Kindle version I read) there's a very clear paragraph jump that had me very confused. There were also grammatical errors throughout.
The romance between Perry and Gigi felt very forced. I thought he was such a cringey character, and I felt like Merlin tried to give him one of those "I'm coming off as a jerk but I'm just troubled, I'm really good guy" personalities, but instead, he came off borderline repulsive.
I really didn't understand why there was so much emphasis on Gigi's age? She's 27 and it's brought up a lot. In one scene she even watches old VHS tapes. Speaking of Gigi, I generally don't like characters like her. Her whole fling with her friend Joshua was wrong, and I felt wrong reading it. Whether or not Joshua and her best friend Alicia were broken up or not, Alicia and Joshua had been childhood sweethearts, and it's wrong to hook-up with your friend's exes.
What saved this book from being 1 star was the fact that I was just looking for a light summer chick-lit, and despite the issues that I had with it, that's what this book was. I most likely will not be continuing the series, though.
