Abroad in Japan by Chris Broad

4.0

"I left Kesennuma feeling uncharacteristically optimistic. Perhaps, above all, I had learned that if you're willing to wait around long enough, sometimes even the craziest dreams in life may end up becoming reality."

I discovered the "Abroad in Japan" Youtube channel a little over a year ago, when I was planning my first ever trip to Tokyo. I instantly very much enjoyed his videos that were both informative and humorous, while showing the most incredible sights in the lesser known areas of Japan. So, naturally, when Chris Broad announced that he was releasing a book about the decade he spent living and travelling in the Land of the Rising Sun, I was quite eager to read it. Now that I have, I can say that I am delighted to have found a similar lightness and authenticity in this book. He managed to tell his story in an entertaining way, with just the right amount of historical and cultural facts about Japan. It really felt like I was taken on this fun and educating journey, with the wildest turns of events that nearly sounded too surreal to be true. And yet, they all were.
