When I say the characters in this are flawed, baby they are flawed. I enjoyed the majority of Zora and Franklin's romance but then things flew off the rails.

SpoilerFranklin is written in a way where I really wanted to like him but his abusive behavior ruined that for me. Zora also had me feeling sour due to her lack of holding Franklin accountable. Each thing was "this is the only time you do this to me" but he kept doing things. ALSO I screamed when the mama threw the mashed potatoes!!!

I think this novel paints a picture of what dating was like for some Black women at that time - suffering and all. An interesting read and certainly different than the movie!
