This is a frustrating book. There is a good story here (altho having been published after The Boys and Wildcard there is little original), but the writing is shallow and at times actively painful.  Now I don't know if that's because Sanderson is writing from the POV of an 18 year old boy who is 'quirky' and 'not a nerd' or if it's genuinely substandard. I think it's a bit of both. The characters aren't particularly well fleshed out just names with an accent and one defining feature attached, the whole motif of metaphors is belaboured and just eye-rollingly bad at times. I think I'll have to read the wiki page to see how it turns out because I can't subject myself to this style of writing again.
