3.5

For the first 150 pages or so, this was a 5/5 read for me, but then I hit the middle slog, which was oddly boring despite being a competition tournament, and ended up skimming after page 360 until the end.

I liked Bree as the main character, but I never once got to /know/ her. You read about her grief, her anger, but you don't get much of a personality. She has a dead mom, which is the beginning to a LOT of fantasy novels, but at least its a consistent thread throughout the book and not just sad backstory.
Nick, this books main love interest, I initially liked a lot. He had the potential of a tragic character, dragged back into the life he'd rejected, because of chivalry and a kind heart. Then instalove with Bree happened, and his character became Captain Cardboard.
Sel is a more interesting character, because he gets more attention paid to him (of course, he's showing signs of instalove heading into book 2, so...) but 70% of the time he's a toxic, antagonistic asshole. I sort of thought, after reading Sel's obsession with keeping Nick safe, that the author had a chance at making a REALLY interesting and unique love triangle, but I think its gonna be the same old two hot guys vying over the same girl trope moving forward. Oh well...
Every other character is flat and just names on the page. Did not like the therapist character or the "time traveling through dead people memories" parts.

I did like this book!! But the info dumps and it being 150-200 pages longer than necessary helps knock it to below "will eventually purchase" for me. Great library read!
