I like the machinations in this very much, and the horror elements are good. McDowell has a good hand usually at showing the hypocrisy of the South, though here he doesn’t really comment on the Jim Crow society that it’s set in (and it’s very much that, as a heads-up). I wish he would have interrogated more there, but Ellinor’s whole deal is very creepy and good. It’s clear she’ll swallow them whole. Baptizing her daughter in Perdido water was a good touch. Excited to read the rest.
Graphic: Child death, Violence, and Blood
Moderate: Child abuse and Racism
