The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley

dark mysterious slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes
Extensively better than The Guest List because everyone wasn't trying to sleep with everybody else's husbands.

Once again, Lucy Foley proves to be one of our most preeminent destination thriller writers, this time on an exclusive seaside manor. The Midnight Feast, however, is slow, which is the cardinal sin of writing thrillers. It takes forever for anything to happen, for any of the characters to show any real depth, for the repeated use of "the birds, the birds, the birds" to mean anything. The third act is compelling, though it takes far too long to get there. Simply put: I was not thrilled!

Unfortunately, I'm two and out with Lucy Foley. I keep expecting one of her books to click with me, and they just don't. I just don't think she's the Agatha Christie of our generation like people keep saying.
