i think that the idea of the book drew me in more than actually reading it. the emotion and character work is so layered and buried that even reading through the very end, you almost miss it. maybe i need to reread it though! this recent trend of unnamed narrators acting as a reflection or refraction for the stories of the people around them is sometimes hit or miss for me. i kept waiting for something even a little more shocking to happen. hands down what i liked most about this book was the discussion of art. i wish that the whole atmosphere of the book had been more dramatically gothic, but anytime it talked about gothic nudes i was interested
