The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine

4.0

Really liked this one. It was a lighthearted and enjoyable read. Addie isn't like the usual kickass, likeable heroines, she's timid, meek and afraid of a lot of things but tries her best despite it.
Her relationship with Meryl was great. Addie's voice was also really distinctive and clear and she was just so cute. I liked how her own thoughts would cut through people's dialogue - reminded me a little of Kate Daniels.
I liked Vollys, surprisingly. She was very interesting: unpredictable, eccentric, callous, temperamental. Kind of an anti-heroine. Every time she came on to the page, you won't know if she would be angry at Addie or if she would be in a good mood. Addie's time with her reminded me strongly of an abusive relationship. Wasn't sure if it was meant that way, but I thought the Gray Death was a great analogy for unhappiness and negativity.
Rhys was adorable, absolutely adorable. The ending was unexpectedly bittersweet. I also loved the declaiming. Not something you see often. I loved the little bits of magic - the tablecloth and the seven league boots and Drualt and fairies and dragons and Gray Death. Added whimsy and charm. Really delightful and enjoyable.
