Darling Girl by Liz Michalski

4.0

REVIEW! They say that fairytales are based off of dark and twisted stories, and this re-imagining of Peter Pan really lives up to that description.

In a nutshell- Wendy Darling’s granddaughter Holly is successful and well known, but her family name and notoriety makes asking for police help impossible when her daughter (formerly in a coma for ten years) goes missing. Holly must find her missing daughter or else her son may also face serious consequences. And plot twist- Holly knows that Peter Pan is involved in her daughters disappearance.

So this plot is COMPLEX, and while the story was building I found myself slightly confused at times. Once everything clicked, however, I was pulled into the dark, twisted, and mysterious world of fairytale stories bleeding into reality. It’s such an unnerving feeling when a childhood classic such as Peter Pan is reimagined in a way that makes your skin crawl, but Michalski truly nailed it by intertwining the dark themes with explorations of motherhood and family. Perfect when paired with a sleeping puppy next to you in your reading nest, and dark chocolate covered caramel bunnies. 3.9 ⭐️
