Bumping this from 2 stars to 3 solely because of the emails between the creators while fleshing out their ideas (included in the collected edition). They've got all the right ideas, just really lackluster execution in these first issues.
It's a mash-up of COPS and Lassie, in Space. The backwoods/hick/alien family having a domestic dispute are drawn completely comically, as opposed to the other aliens which seem plausible and have some depth to their characters. It completely ruins the mood.
Here's to hoping the creators get their shit together and get on with the real story they want to tell, instead of trying to be funny, and failing miserably.
UPDATE: vols 2-4 were on sale, so i picked them up, but re-read vol1 first, and seemed to like it a lot more the second time.
