Stone Sky Gold Mountain by Mirandi Riwoe

challenging emotional informative reflective medium-paced

4.0

Stone Sky Gold Mountain is the story of Ying and Lai Yue, who were forced to try and make their fortunes on Australia’s goldfields. The miserable and pitiful conditions were perfectly captured as was the fact that the decks were stacked against them actually succeeding. Moving away from the goldfields to seek other work didn’t offer much of a reprieve. The anti-Chinese racism, while accurate to the time, was really confronting to read. also appreciated the exploration of the position of women through Ying’s story (she disguised herself as a man for safety) and that of Sophie, a prostitute, and her maid Meriem. This book is a welcome correction to the traditional white male colonial goldfield narrative.
