Midnight: A Gangster Love Story by Sister Souljah

3.0

Okay so again im going to need good reads to let us give half stars dammit! it was a 3.5 for me..

But I really enjoyed it! took me a little bit to get into it but the way she describes the characters it makes me love them and want to know more about them, their story, and who they are.
It really was a good book! My only problem was the constant bashing on americans or women (I understand it wasnt all women midnight was referring to since he had only lived in NYC since being in America)
BUTTT IT WAS LIKE Okay we get it.. we think backwards because we have sex before marriage and love money lol and everything is taxed yes but good god every page it was like why african/Muslim women would never do this but American women would do this.. we get it.. youre useless unless youre a big blob of submissive, sweet, serenity lol. no but seriously it was a bit annoying. All women arent angry, or out to get men, or solely think with emotion. women can be leaders too! and in alot of cases lead better than men. but HEYYY i digress :) because i swear i liked the book ! lol

Midnight
VERY powerful, smart, quick, and a hard worker. I definitely admired his character but was so shook on him being 14.
there are children/teens that are more mature than their peers and given his background he was bound to be a hard worker. He was always with his eyes open and two steps ahead of the game (except for the ending..lol). He had so many different hats he wore but he seemed to balance them all so well with ease. He was an exceptional son, brother, and employee. He was the star of every basketball game, and the star in fighting. He seemed to keep alot to himself though but still maintained a good friendship with his two best friends. He was just .. powerful! I wish he was older in this book though him being 14 frustrated me because I didnt see it being realistic but then I would say it was it was a constant battle in my head lol. He LOVED his mother and family beyond words and took on the leadership role once his father was no longer around. it was refreshing. and the way he loved akemi was so beautiful.

Umma was the epitome of a mother, she was intelligent, and sweet it was like everytime she was talked about in the book I saw her before my eyes. kinda wish there were pictures lol. she was quiet but always dropping knowledge to her children and remaining observant.

Naja This girl was a firecracker ! lol it was insane to see how smart she was and to also bring in a childs point of view in this book. she was always honest and sometimes too honest lol

Bangs
okay so i knew from the jump what was going on with her. everytime her character was brought in it broke my heart because ITS REAL PEOPLE this shit happens everyday in black communities and families and people chose to over look it and be ignorant its frustrating and saddening.. i really enjoyed her character i just wish she had a different outcome.. or something great happened for her..

AKEMI Girl if you dont learn some damn english lol. their love story was amazing but sometimes frustrating because its like okay she knows what 3 languages but she cant go ahead and learn some English.. the language barrier was huge and open but some way they made it work. it was beautiful to watch her and midnight fall in love without many words but still be on the same page.. as an artist i can only imagine her style was insane. i really enjoyed her character but sometimes it aggravated me how she was constantly depicted as this sweet innocent little submissive queen
lol like okay i get it its her character but she also had some fire in her, lets not forget that! helloooo everything isnt all sweet caresses and joy lol but i digress..

Im not going to go too far into details but i liked the book! loved alot of the quotes and with that ending...

im definetly getting the second one TODAY.
